Go wireless, finally

Just set the wireless network. $300 for a 802.11.b router and PCMCIA card, good deal. But the firmware of the router seems not stable enough. Maybe I should exchange it for a better one, perhaps 11g.

oh... I hate wireless devices, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS... althought I am a IT guy, they made me feel painful... >_<

I like my Linksys.

Avoid the Belkin (which I also have). Althou the warranty is excellent (can't beat life warranty), the design is crap. It lacks the loopback interface, so setting up and accessing virtual servers from your own LAN is a PITA.

The ASUS routers are also supposed to be decent.

Don't spend more than a few hundred bucks for a kit thou. The new MIMO devices are coming out but they are not selling well. 802.11b is perfectly adequate for the web for most folks (unless you have HKBB or Hutchison super-fast Internet access), people are just not upgrading, so I think manufacturers are going to be selling MIMO devices really cheap in the next few months.

I love Linksys, but wireless router...no way, at least...till now.

The Buffalo router is also dropping the wireless connections weekly for some unknown reasons. Each and every time I would have to unplug the power to the router to have it reset while the wired connection was still OK.

My router is "Senao", a brand name equals to no-frill. The PCMCIA is EagleTec, also not premium brand. Nevertheless, the signal of the router is very good, and been stable since I set it up two days ago. Since the price is excellent (I get it brand new, from my colleague). So I will keep it.

Years ago, back when HK had just started out BB for a couple of years, I bought one of those cheap cheap Sercomm wired router for its "nice" price. It was so slow it turned a wired BB connection into something much slower than an otherwise 802.11b connection which wasn't much faster than a 56K modem connection!

My set is fast, with exceptional strong signal. Don't know if it's stable or not, can only tell later.

Judging from the excellent reputation the Senao 802.11b Wifi cards http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/SenaoCard, I would assume your wifi router to be decent. In fact, I would open it up and if there is a 2511 PCMCIA card inside then I would just savage it.

James, what channels are everybody else on, and what channel are you on? Pick the less crowded within 1, 6 and 11.
