Peak Oil
Just begin to be interested in this topic. It's really a big problem of our civilization, and we are too close to it without a proper solution. Read more here.

The term is rather ambiguous: "the point in time when extraction of oil from the earth reaches its highest point". I can see if it meant the "halfway" point, where only half the oil is left to be extracted. But the "highest" point could go way pass the "halfway" point - we could, in theory, continually increase the rate of extraction until the very end.
I don't think natural gas is the replacement. I am not sure which would be but I would like to see Hydrogen being the replacement fuel for vehicles at least.
Whatever the replacement will be, we don't have much time to find it out.
You're right about halfway point, but it's really a problem of consumption rate vs production rate. The consumption rate is increasing, and we were happy in the pass because we also have a increasing production rate. The world will be different when the production rate decrease. Countries will fight for oil-supply: economically, dipolmatically, or war for whatever reasons.....
